Canada introduces resolution on Iran at the UN

Toronto, Ontario, 30 October 2009 (CBNS) — Canada tabled a resolution at the UN last Thursday condemning Iran’s human rights record and will introduce it this coming week. It is the sixth resolution which Canada has tabled at the U.N. since 2003. The resolution has been passed each year by a vote of the membership of the U.N.General Assembly, attracting many co-sponsors, including the EU.

United Nations’ International Day of Peace

Stratford, Ontario, 29 September 2009 (CBNS) — United Nations’ International Day of Peace was celebrated at Stratford City Hall on September 21 with live music and two speakers, Dr. Alistair Edgar and Dr. Gerald Filson. International Day of Peace was proposed to the UN in 1981 by Costa Rica with the intention that it would be a day of global ceasefire.

Canadian Baha'is participate in U.N. Sustainable Development session

Alicia Cundall, 19, one of the Baha'i representatives at the U.N. Commission on Sustainable Development, read the statement prepared by the youth caucus for the plenary session of governments on 14 May. Toronto, Ontario, 21 May 2009 (CBNS) — 19-year-old Canadian, Alicia Cundall, was one of the youngest representatives from a nongovernmental organization to attend this year's U.N. Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD-17) as a member of the youth caucus, one of the major groups of the civil society accredited to participate at the CSD. Alicia delivered a closing statement by the youth caucus to the plenary session of governments on 14 May.

Canadian Bahá’í Delegates at the Commission on the Status of Women

Elizabeth Wright, Gerald Filson and Deloria Bighorn, Canadian delegates to the UN CSWToronto, Ontario, 24 March 2009 (CBNS) — Three Canadian Bahá’ís joined an international Bahá’í delegation to participate in the 53rd UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), held in New York from 2 to 13 March 2009. The CSW is a technical commission of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (ECOSOC) of the United Nations. Its function is to promote women’s rights in political, economic, civil, social and educational fields and to make recommendations and present reports on the development of women’s rights and on new urgent issues.
